In The Trenches

This past week did not turn out the way I had planned!!  How about you?  I had many canceled meetings, mountains of laundry, an ER visit and a very sick kid.  Three years ago, my perspective to my circumstances would have consumed me and I would have been extremely mad at myself for not accomplishing what I thought I needed to do.  What makes it different now?  Well, I simply changed my mind to how I look at the unexpected.  How did I change my mind?  It took some practice, but I released the rule I put on myself- perfection- and literally would say to myself, Be in the moment. I dare you to try it and see if it works for you too.  Lately, I’ve been reflecting on why a person would want to be in the trenches when they don’t have to be?  This past week’s episode was with one of my inspiring friends, Angela D’Alessandro, who does just that.  Seriously, you don’t want to miss this one!

My heart aches for anyone who has experienced abuse, but chooses not to face it or talk about it.  Do you know someone who has been sexually abused?  What about physically abused?  ANY ABUSE IS DAMAGING TO THE SOUL.  If you do choose to overcome such tragedy, YOU become a hero to someone and emotionally resilient.

Angela’s story is shocking, gripping, and powerful.  I think everyone should get to know her.  The quality I admire about her the most is that she chooses to be in the trenches.  What I mean by this, is that she reaches out to young girls on a weekly basis to empower them to tell their story and to heal.  Angela also reaches out on a daily basis to empower women to be who they were made to be and helps them with their confidence.

I had a huge lump in my throat the first time I heard her story.  Did she say she was raped?  And then it was… countless times?  I can only begin to imagine the emotional, mental, and physical torture that held her captive; But, what I would like to point out to you all, is that this story is full of hope and restoration.  YES….. HOPE! I’m a firm believer that everyone wants hope regardless of race or religious backgrounds.

It is a huge desire of Angela’s to help others.  If she can overcome such tragedy then anyone can.  She will quickly admit to you that the road to healing was not quick nor was it easy, but she will also say it was worth it.  When you get to know her, she will also tell you that she wouldn’t change a thing about her past because it has helped mold her into the woman she is today.

People want to feel safe, loved, and respected and that is why Angela inspires people.  She does just that.  Her past was full of pain, anger, suffering, and feeling alone but she has fought her way to overcome her past.  Angela is in the trenches to help others overcome darkness… she’s clearly not in it for herself.  It’s about giving back.

Do you know that 1 out of 3 girls will be sexually abused before the age of 18 and 1 out of 6 boys will be sexually abused as well!!!  THIS IS NOT OKAY!!!!  It’s time to raise our voices together and start talking about the Taboo topics. Too often, people convince themselves that their story doesn’t matter and live in depression. You have the power to help change this.

I can’t wait to see what unfolds for Angela.  I am blessed to be working on a project with her so keep your eyes and ears open for details.  To find out more about Angela you can send her a quick email to  She is living a beautiful Life In Purple.
